Astronauts

While doing reference research for a personal project I came upon some amazing photos of 60's era astronauts. It's amazing to me that these guys risked their lives for the exploration of space. Most of these guys look like total dweebs, but have got to be some of the ballsiest people on earth. I loved the contradiction.

As for the style, I'm totally ripping off the colors from countless ads I've seen, but instead of stopping myself from having fun, I just said screw it and made it anyways, because, why not? It's liberating to just make what I feel like and not care if I fall on my face. I think for the first time since I was a little kid I finally am just making art for fun again, and it doesn't have to take 20 hours, it can be these quick little farts of ideas.

Also, sometimes the search for originality can stop us from even taking chances... I have stopped myself too many times to remember from making something because I felt like it wasn't original enough or it didn't fit my misguided notion of what I was "supposed" to be making.

These could be parodies of current style choice because they are kinda full of cliches, but I wasn't too concerned with the style, just the idea of astronauts using modern style. Our current view of astronauts seems to be a little distant because the media does not portray them as heroes like they used to.




I kind of like using tangents and cutting off words right now. I think it's interesting to think that by cutting off a word, you're almost cutting of the idea... like interrupting someone in mid-sentence, because you're bored of what they are trying to say.... which is how I think current society views astronauts and the space program.

Quarter Century

This is a bit of a departure from what I normally do, but I think it's also reflective of my life and my mind in general at this point. I just turned 25 and life has been pretty interesting so far. I feel very fortunate to be alive and experiencing life. And more importantly, trying to learn from my experiences so far. I like to think that everyone goes through growth their whole lives, it's what makes life worth living in my understanding.

Bloc 11

I love sketching. Now that the weather is nice, it's sooo awesome to just sit outside and look at the beautiful world around us.

Done at Bloc 11 Cafe at Union Square in Somerville after visiting Hub Comics (my favorite comic shop in Boston so far).

Diesel Cafe

Felt like sketchin' tonight. My gf is coming in to town tomorrow (she lives in San Diego) and we're road trippin' to Ithaca, NY for her sister's graduation, so I felt guilt free for spending my Friday night in a cafe making art.

Warm-up sketch

I need to try this some more. Start the day with a random sketch, then finish after work when I've had some time to think about it and also when I'm a lot more warmed up.

Two Giants

It's strange how some things don't turn out like you want them to. Here are two examples of trying to get an idea out of my head, but having totally unpredictable results. Sometimes things just have to be finished before you can learn and move on.

The first one is my failed attempt to get what I somewhat managed to get in the second.

Personal Demons

It's nice to see all that experimentation pay off a bit. This is a pencil drawing, with ink wash, and gouache. Plus, I cheated a bit in Photoshop with some levels adjustments and some really loose dodging and burning.

Moleskine

Getting into a habit of sketching and then painting those sketches at a later date in my moleskine watercolor book.

Warm-up!

Warm-up sketches are really valuable. Exploring colors and designs that you rarely use in your more finished work is a lot of fun, and really important to an artist's development.

Tank City

This image comes from a love of the art of Japanese artists Otomo Katsuhiro, Hayao Miyazaki, and Australian illustrator Shaun Tan. There is a story to this, but I want to save it for when I can actually do something with this idea.

X-Mullets

Here is the next super hero, going along with my friends from SCAD. The category is X-men with mullets. I know Wolverine doesn't have a mullet, but I couldn't help it. And once you draw a mullet on a guy, you have to make him have really weird proportions and then have him stand around with a jug of moonshine near a broken down old truck with dogs on a hot day.... right?

I started with a Col-erase pencil, then inked it with a pigment liner, then used gouache on it, all on a smooth finish bristol board. Slight touch ups with the always handy colored pencil.

A Green Lantern

Maybe a little bit of a boring pose, but I'm just getting warmed up. It's been a long time since I've drawn comic book characters. I guess I'm more interested in colors and form right now than pose.... looking forward to the next one!

Gouache and Lattes

I've been bringing my pallette with three colors (ult. blue, some cheap yellow, and alizarin crimson) and white to some of the local cafes to paint in my sketchbook. I used the leftover red to make the second image, no plan, just makin' shapes. Then used my colored pencils to tighten things up and make some stuff. Yay for sketching. Definitely not acurate values and such, and I know theres a lot to improve on for color variation and depth, bla bla bla... I'm still getting used to this medium and for maybe 20 minutes, I can't complain.

Sketches from a nomadic life.

I haven't updated my sketchbook in a long time, so here goes. These sketches are from the past 8 months, from the time I moved from Chicago to LA, back home to "near Seattle", and finally to Boston for my new job. Life is crazy.

Just when you think you are achieving your goals, you find out that what you want to do and what you are made to do are two different things. Thankfully, I have the artist part right, but as for what kind of artist.... that is to be decided.

We're all just spinning solar systems slowly forming as time wears on.

Update!

I started a new job at Rockstar New England and have not been able to update. So please enjoy a little warm-up sketch. It's a lil' rough, but u get the idea.
