Giant Walking Stick, etc.

This is a giant walking stick, it has a little village on its back.

The other images are for a concept art test.

The last one was drawn by Tim Seeley, colored by me for a movie.

Just messing around with a different style... me likes.

Finally, an Update

It's been awhile, but I finally made something that wasn't work related and was really just a quick, just for fun, piece of art. It's been awhile since I made anything for fun, so this was a pleasant experience. I may go back in and touch things up with colored pencil, but for now it's just good ol' watercolor over a loose pencil sketch.

I'm not sure exactly what the picture is about, but I'm sure my subconscious knows.

Experiments....

...sometimes they come out good, sometimes not so much. But the important thing is to learn from them. Thankfully, I don't make my living from painting, but maybe some day I will.

This was done in oils in about five and half hours.

Paintin's

I'm taking a figure painting class. Purely for technical practice. It's great to have an excuse to paint and further my understanding of the medium. I have a loooong way to go and I'm looking forward to seeing how I can apply what I've been learning.

I sure do like sketching.

There is something about the sketch that appeals to me. It has energy, it is full of possibilities, and when I see it, I can imagine exactly what I want to see without having to go through the pain of the birthing process. So basically I'm a lazy artist by nature.
For this page, I was working on a sketch for a cover to the comic Hack/Slash. I wanted to go with a poster from around the turn of the century, mixed with Winsor McCay, some old Russian poster I found online, and a classic horror movie poster I saw a local theatre.
The Dragon sketch is an idea for a childrens' book. I have all these visuals with a very basic cliche narrative in mind... I need to work on the actual story some day to make it work.

DrawNight

The theme was very loose, and wasn't really even expected tonight. Skottie finally said, "Draw your dream project."

So this is what I thought of... my dream for that moment. A dragon with a laser gun attached to its chest versus a giant gorilla with a mini-gun attached to his shoulder and a Nazi at that. Both being controlled by riders.

I'll try to add some color when I make the time. I altered some valued in PS already.

A sort of failed attempt

Even though the actual watercolors didn't turn out, I'm planning on messing with it in photoshop to see if I can salvage the image. I just felt like posting it in its current state to hopefully document what will be a substantial improvement... or not.
And I think my scanner is crapping out on me.

Ahhh, details.

Just a work in progress. This will be the first of many versions I'm sure, but just wanted to actually spend time on something for once.

CafeNeo

Sundays are my favorite day. I go to a cafe, sit and draw from life or my imagination. Often times I'll try to paint something really quick. Most of the time I'm not very successful, but it doesn't keep me from trying. The more I can do of these types of things, the better.
I realized today that I have not painted many scenes at all. All of the details, color, and lighting of an environment is pretty overwhelming to me at this point, but in time I'm sure I'll learn a few things about color and light.

Watercolor Knight

Just messing around. He looks a tad meaner than I wanted, but I'm happy with how this little experiment turned out. I hope to continue this a bit further and see where it goes.

Full Metal Alchemist WIP

I'm still not finished with the black and white rendering. It's been awhile since I've done anything like this and I'm trying to take my time and not rush the process. Once I get the values just right, the coloring shouldn't take too much time at all.

Photoshop is our friend

I cheated and did a bit of manipulation in photoshop. Mainly to the values.

YO JOE!

This are some of my favorite pages from GI Joe: America's Elite #22-24. I can't believe I've drawn over 100 pages since I started. I consider myself so very lucky to have this job. And it's looking like I'll be working on GI Joe for at least another year. I'm excited to see how my work develops in that time. Also, I hope to be working with the colorist, Jean-Francois Beaulieu. He's awesome.

Positive Procrastination

Rushed the watercolors.. didn't really have a gameplan tonight... but I think I'm going to have to change that... or not.

Drawing from Life

I really didn't know what I was doing tonight, just messing around. I am not feeling the watercolors these days.

Dry Brush Lifedrawing

Nudey drawings

So I experimented with black and white acrylic on brown paper... didn't turn out so well. Looks a little mannish to me. Sebastian Kruger, I am not.

Randmoness

This is a sketch I did while at the San Diego airport. Nothing fancy.
This is a drawing/watercolor done in an hour and a half. Just messing around.

I colored this very quickly after a long day of drawing GI Joe. The drawing itself was done before I started the comic. Probably why I spent so much time on the details... those were the days.

A quick sketch done probably before I started GI Joe, but colored a few days ago.

And this is a work-in-progress. I drew this before I started GI Joe and have decided to attempt coloring it in my spare time. This is what I got after an hour or so... I'm pretty slow.

The Process of Creation- Step 5

And she's done. I ended up going with watercolor and guoache and then realized that the textures were a bit too harsh, so I softened them in Photoshop. This project went on much longer than I ever wanted, but it's probably the first time I've ever spent so long on a project.

Cyborg

This drawing was one of those stream of consciousness sort of things. I had no plan and just drew parts as they came and then tried to polish it up. I'm very pleased with the outcome, and I like the design, because it's just weird.

The Process of Creation- Step 4

This is more or less a color sketch of what I want. It's a little too pastel due to the fact that at the time I did it I was using a malfunctioning monitor (the contrast was too high and it was also very dark). So hopefully by the time I finish it, all will be well. Right now I'm starting to flat it, starting with the trees.

Sketchin'

I was at starbucks, trying to get into a character's head ( the female). But as I always do, I take little breaks to read comics. I had the Ultimates graphic novel with me and was inspired to draw the Hulk as well. If all goes well, I'll be drawing the Hulk some day. Just wait.

The Process of Creation- Step 3

I went over the pencils with ink wash. It upped the contrast, but maybe have lost a little bit of detail. I also might continue inkwashing to get more subtle values. Or I will add more subtle values during the coloring stage. This will happen most likely in Photoshop, but I am curious to experiment with watercolor, as well.

Sketches from my latest book

Many of these sketches were done during this last week when I spent a week with my family (parents and little brother) at Lake Chelan in Washington State. Some were done for a GI Joe comic I did a few weeks ago. I generally work very fast and without direction. The more detailed sketches often happen for reasons I can't control, though I wish I could.
